随着医学模式的改变，医学心理学在临床中的应用不断得以发展。这就对医学生提出更高要求——不仅懂生物学知识，而且要掌握心理社会科学的有关知识。

通过对《医学心理学》知识的学习，使学生初步掌握医学心理学思想，基本理论，学习使用心理测验，了解疾病发生中的心理社会因素，掌握各种心理治疗方法，在临床工作中开展心理治疗，掌握与心理社会因素有关的各系统疾病，知道在药物治疗的同时应辅以心理治疗，掌握与病人有关的各类医学心理学问题，学会更好地协调医患关系，掌握心理健康知识，为病人提供预防疾病的知识。
